1) About cookies
Cookies are files or pieces of information that may be stored on your computer (or other internet enabled devices, such as a smartphone) each time a website is visited.
There are two types of cookies: session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are temporary files which are erased when you close the browser. Persistent cookies remain in your browser’s subfolder and are activated again once you visit the website that created that cookie. Persistent cookies remain in the browser’s subfolder until you delete them manually or they expire (your browser deletes them at the end of the duration period specified within the persistent cookie’s file).

METIS uses analytical cookies (Google Analytics) tool that helps website owners to collect information, only in aggregate form, concerning use of the site by visitors (number of visitors, page views, time spent, geographic areas of origin, tools used, etc.). This information, generated through mere access to the site, is automatically transmitted to server machines located in the United States of America and stored there by Google. METIS has set Google Analytics tool to anonymize your IP address, so the information collected is used for statistical purposes and no other. The IP anonymization feature in Google Analytics sets the last octet of IPv4 user IP addresses and the last 80 bits of IPv6 addresses to zeros in memory shortly after being sent to the Google Analytics Collection Network. The full IP address is never written to disk in this case.
METIS also informs you that it has accepted the Amendment on data processing provided by Google Analytics in compliance with the Directive 95/46/EC (Google Analytics Data Processing Amendment). With this additional agreement, Google commits itself to the Customer, as a Company established in the territory of a member state of the European Economic Area, to process the data according to the requests of the Customer, which it may provide through the settings of the services. Google warrants that it will only process the Personal Data of the Customer within the limits of the instructions given and will not share any Data with other additional Google products unless the Customer itself activate them.
For the foregoing, METIS informs you that all of the options provided by Google Analytics, including advertising and data sharing with Google, have been disabled for this website. Therefore, on this website, personal data are processed only for statistical purposes.
METIS also uses WPML (WordPress Multi Language) plugin. This plugin lets authors write the website content in different languages. It also allows users to see the content in their own language. In fact, WPML has a setting to enable Browser Redirect. With this setting, the user will be automatically directed to the language of the browser he is using. So, if the user has the browser language set to Italian, he will automatically be redirected to the Italian version of our site each time he visits. If disabled, visitors will not be able to see the content in the language they have selected. More info here.
In conclusion, this website does not use (its own or of third parties) profiling cookies.
In particular, the following technical cookies are currently used on this website:
- SID – first-party technical cookie, session duration (Session ID);
- _gat (Google Analytics), third party technical cookie that speeds up page loading, 10 minutes duration;
- _ga (Google Analytics), third party technical cookie that distinguishes users, 2 years duration;
- _icl _wpml (WPML), third party technical cookie for detecting and setting the language of the website based on the origin of the user, 24 hours duration.

YouTube privacy-enhanced mode
In our website we have embedded some of our videos with the technology provided by YouTube LLC 901 Cherry Ave., San Bruno, CA 94066, USA, Fax: +1 650-253-0001, a company belonging to Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. In this embedding we used the privacy-enhanced mode option. According to the information provided by YouTube, with the “iframe” code created with the privacy-enhanced mode option enabled YouTube won’t store information about visitors on our website unless they play the video. Then, this option avoids the user to be automatically tracked by YouTube simply displaying one of our webpage that contains a video. This is acceptable by some laws because it sets cookies after the user starts playing video.
METIS is not liable for subsequent amendments and additions to the information of third party cookies or for the changes in their operating modes, since the third party processing the data is an autonomous entity different from METIS.
