Cultural Heritage

METIS has been designing and producing scanners for cultural heritage needs for many years and has built a very solid reputation on the quality of images, performance and user-friendliness of the software, and most of all the incredible reliability of our products.

Today one can find METIS scanners in the most prestigious libraries, archives and museums around the world. They can also be found in universities, restoration firms, private collections, cartographic institutes, and more. Among them we highlight the Vatican Apostolic Library, the Library of Congress in Washington DC, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) in Paris, the Institute Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya in Barcelona and numerous institutions, national and cultural historical archives in Italy, Europe, Russia, China, etc.

METIS DRS-DCS scanners set the bar by reaching the highest possible marks when scored against either FADGI or METAMORFOZE guidelines (those are quality digitization guidelines for Cultural Heritage applications drafted in US and Europe respectively), making our scanners the natural, and sometimes only, choice if one needs the highest possible image quality.

DRS-DCS scanners are also extremely accurate geometrically, a mandatory requirement for professional cartographic applications.

In addition to offering unparalleled quality, METIS DCS-DRS systems can provide unique features such as 3D calculation, glossiness and the ability to customize in real-time the visual appearance of the scanned original. These special features are very useful but also mandatory in some specific digitization tasks, for example:

  • Scanning paintings, coins, seals, engraved copper plates, or anything where the 3-dimensionality of the object is needed to provide a more complete visual representation of the original;
  • Whenever glossy or metallic parts are present (e.g. gold in a parchment) in order to provide the desired visual appearance and therefore minimize or maximize reflections and metallic appearance;
  • Calculating 3D information aimed to study the original document or work of art;
  • Calculating 3D information aimed to reproduce the original in 3D and not only in color (e.g. a painting can today be reproduced including the embossing through digital printer with embossing capabilities).

THE EDS FAMILY

The EDS family (Easy Digital Scanner) is a line of professional scanners created by METIS in order to offer a superior image quality, ergonomics, ease of use and high productivity in a unique integrated solution.

The EDS family integrates an innovative V-Table design supported by specific software tools in order to hold the originals in any possible position/angle. The V-table has been specifically designed by METIS in order to accept and gently hold different kind of originals in an optimal manner, even antique books with limited opening angle.

The EDS family currently includes the EDS GAMMA and the EDS ALPHA.
